CereGate unveils breakthrough: Scientific publication demonstrates that spinal cord implants can be repurposed to serve as computer-brain-interfaces.
8 January 2024
CereGate is glad to announce the publication of our groundbreaking paper in “Brain Stimulation”. Brain Stimulation is a premier peer-reviewed journal in the field of neuromodulation.
In this paper we demonstrate that Spinal Cord Stimulator (SCS) implants can be repurposed to serve as computer-brain-interfaces (CBI). This innovative CBI is capable of transmitting rhythmic cues, Morse code, and
essential postural information. Individuals exhibited quick adaptability, efficiently using the CBI across various tasks. The widespread availability of SCS implants positions it as a strong contender among other CBI platforms. This proof-of-concept not only signals a significant development in neurotechnology but also lays the groundwork for potential future clinical applications, marking a step forward in the integration of spinal cord implants and cognitive interfaces. Our approach opens up entirely new possibilities, turning existing implants into powerful computer-brain interfaces - connecting machine and mind with the technology of today.
The study was performed in close collaboration with the team of Dr. Loránd Erōss from the National Institute of Mental Health, Neurology, and Neurosurgery in Budapest, Hungary. The full text is open access and can be obtained here . A demonstration video of the spinal computer-brain interface can be viewed here.
